District cooling

Flexible. Low carbon. Cost-effective.

District cooling is an ideal solution for keeping cities and district areas comfortable in warm weather. Gren is at the leading-edge of this environmentally friendly technology. Already, we’re successfully cooling homes and businesses in Estonia.

How it works?

District cooling is an environmentally friendly way to cool urban buildings. Similar to district heating, with district cooling a network of pipes is used to transport chilled water for multiple people to use, keeping premises, industrial buildings and apartments cool.

For example, we can use river water as a natural coolant – the cooled water is piped to a customer’s cooling system, circulates through their building, and provides the right indoor climate.

District cooling brings you:

Reduced emissions

District cooling is an environmentally friendly way to keep indoor environments cool. When you switch from fossil fuels to renewable cooling, you’re benefiting people and the planet.

A new way to save

Making the move to district cooling means fewer investments, lower maintenance costs, and lower operating costs.

Future-proof spaces

Connecting a property to our cooling network frees up space and helps property owners achieve carbon neutrality with better energy labels and efficiency.

Tartu – a downtown district cooling plant

Our environmentally friendly and high-efficiency district cooling plant in Tartu is located by the Emajõgi River and uses the river’s cool water as a natural cooling resource. Kvartal shopping centre in the heart of Tartu is one of our customers.

Pärnu – using river water as a cooling source

In downtown Pärnu, our district cooling plant uses Pärnu’s river water as a natural cooling source and has the capacity to connect every downtown public building to its network. We also have cooperation, e.g., with the Pärnu Keskus shopping centre.

Tartu – cooling a large retail and leisure center

Aardla district cooling plant’s initial capacity was designed to serve Lõunakeskus – it’s the largest shopping and leisure centre in Southern Estonia. Gren supplies the centre and the buildings nearby.
