Five Years of Gren: Growing Together, Delivering Positively Different Energy
On 5 July, Gren celebrated five years of growth and development helping communities, cities and industrial customers build a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
Built on district heating, we’ve grown into a Northern European energy company delivering local energy solutions across the Baltics and the UK. Along the way, we’ve expanded our operations, invested in essential infrastructure and, most importantly, continued to support the people and places that rely on us every day.
District heating as a foundation for local energy systems
District heating has always been at the heart of our business, and it remains the foundation on which we continue to build new energy solutions. These systems are an established and efficient part of the energy infrastructure in the Baltics, developed over decades and continuously modernised.
They provide reliable heat to households, public buildings and industries, while also serving as a platform for integrating new energy solutions, including renewable fuels, waste heat, electrification and flexible technologies.
Expanding operations and strengthening local presence
Five years of investment and growth have transformed the scale of our operations.
- Heat generation capacity has grown from 700 MW to 1,500 MW.
- Energy sales have increased from approximately 1.8 TWh to 3 TWh.
- District heating network infrastructure has expanded from 400 km to 740 km.
- District cooling networks now extend to 15 km.
Our presence in the Baltics has grown from 11 to 18 locations, including Viljandi, Kohtla-Järve/Jõhvi, Riga, Gulbene, Akmenė, Trakai and Visaginas.
In addition, our infrastructure is deeply embedded in local communities and economies, supporting long-term customer relationships and providing essential services with consistent demand.

Reliable, affordable and lower-carbon energy
We continue to develop our production portfolio towards lower-carbon energy sources, while maintaining reliability and affordability.
Currently, 74% of fuel use is based on biomass and 22% on waste-derived fuels, with fossil fuels accounting for 4%. Compared to the baseline, CO₂ emissions have decreased by 24% at Group level and by 29% across Baltic operations.
This transition reflects a long-term approach where sustainability is integrated into investments, operations and day-to-day decision-making.
Investing in resilient energy infrastructure
Our development has been supported by continued investment in long-life energy infrastructure.
We entered the United Kingdom market in 2023, establishing a new platform for growth. Our UK business has acquired and improved a portfolio of biomass and Energy-from-Waste facilities and taken a 50% stake in the South Clyde Energy Centre in Glasgow.
In parallel, Gren UK is developing Energy on Clyde, a new heat and power network business designed to support low-carbon district heating in a growing urban area.
In Latvia, the Riga Waste-to-Energy project in Acone will contribute to reduced landfill use, improved energy security and long-term heat supply. A new 50 MW biomass boiler plant is also under construction to further strengthen Riga’s district heating capacity.
These projects demonstrate our focus on developing infrastructure that supports local resilience and long-term energy system stability.

Operational Excellence as a driver of performance
Operational Excellence is a core part of how we manage, develop and improve our operations across all markets.
The approach focuses on continuously strengthening reliability, efficiency and safety in both production and network operations. It combines technical expertise, local knowledge and practical experience to optimise existing assets while supporting the development of new solutions.
This way of working is visible across the organisation, from everyday operational improvements to more advanced solutions such as production optimisation, integration of new technologies and the use of data-driven tools in in our production facilities.
Operational Excellence is not only about processes or technology. It reflects a consistent way of working across teams and countries, where experience is shared, improvements are implemented in practice and performance is strengthened over time.
Expanding capabilities and energy solutions
Over the past five years, we have broadened our business beyond traditional district heating.
Industrial Energy Services supports industrial customers with tailored energy solutions, improving efficiency, reliability and sustainability. Projects with E-Piim, Juodeliai and Metsä Wood demonstrate long-term customer partnerships.
We have also strengthened our role in energy markets through Advanced Power Trading. In Estonia, we are investing in two 30 MW power plants to provide frequency reserve capacity, supporting the stability of the electricity system. These developments are complemented by battery energy storage solutions.
Together, these activities support more flexible, integrated and future-ready energy systems.

People and expertise as a core strength
Our development is supported by our people.
Over five years, our team has grown from 270 to more than 500 employees, bringing together technical expertise, local market knowledge and operational experience.
This combination enables us to operate complex energy systems, transfer knowledge across markets and expand into new geographies, including the UK.
Employee engagement remains strong, with an engagement index of 81 in 2025. Safety continues to be a key priority, reflected in a Group Safety Index of 98.65%.
Long-term growth and development
Our growth has been driven by a combination of operational performance, investment and expansion into new markets. And the future’s bright , we continue to benefit from long-term structural developments in the energy sector, including the need for:
- decarbonisation,
- electrification,
- energy security,
- and more integrated, flexible energy systems.

Looking ahead
Five years is an important milestone, but for us, it is only the beginning.
We’re immensely proud of how we have developed from a regional energy company into a broader Northern European platform built on essential infrastructure and long-term customer relationships.
As Europe’s energy transition continues, we remain focused on investing in local infrastructure, strengthening communities and delivering positively different energy for the long-term.
