Gren Acquires the District Heating Network of Kohtla-Järve’s Sompa Subdistrict, in Estonia
Gren Viru AS has acquired the district heating network of the Sompa subdistrict in Kohtla-Järve, Estonia, from OÜ OSK Grupp. As of 1 June 2025, the network will be integrated into Gren Viru’s unified district heating system. Integrating the Sompa area into Gren’s network will help to harmonise heat energy prices and improve service quality across the various subdistricts of Kohtla-Järve.
“Service provision will continue without interruption, as the Sompa heating network was already physically connected to Gren Viru’s district heating mainline. Our district heating network in Kohtla-Järve, Jõhvi and Ahtme was previously 160 kilometres long; now, thanks to the Sompa pipeline, it will extend by approximately 10 kilometres, and the number of our customers will increase by nearly 150. All customers in the Sompa area will be charged Gren Viru’s existing price of €62.78 per megawatt-hour, approved by the Competition Authority, plus VAT,” said Andres Klaasmägi, Management Board Member of Gren Viru AS. “We will communicate operational information directly to customers,” he added.
According to Margo Külaots, Head of Gren in Estonia, connecting to Gren’s district heating network will bring a significant reduction in heating costs for Sompa customers, while also improving the quality and reliability of the service. “For the past two and a half years, Gren has been providing residents and businesses in Kohtla-Järve, Jõhvi and Ahtme with sustainable district heating, largely based on waste heat. To ensure good service quality and keep prices affordable, we began extensive network renovations last year, and we plan to continue with this work in the coming years. Sompa customers will now benefit from all of this,” he added.
According to Külaots, Gren aims to grow not only in the field of district heating, but also to be a trailblazer in other areas of energy. Gren’s district heating systems largely operate on local biofuels and residual heat, and its heating networks are continuously modernised in all areas of operation, with expansion driven by new customer connections. Gren was also the first in the Baltics to introduce a new service – district cooling – which is now available in both Tartu and Pärnu. Additionally, in 2023, Gren became the first company in Estonia to adopt a thermal storage system at its Tartu cogeneration plant to improve energy efficiency.
