Gren commences construction of a 20 MW electrode boiler building at the Jelgava CHP plant

Gren has commenced the construction of a new 20 MW electrode hot water boiler building at its biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Jelgava, with foundation concreting currently under way. Simultaneously, pipeline connections are being installed to link the new equipment with the existing plant systems, and work has begun on establishing the electricity connection. The boiler will be housed in a compact building next to the heat storage unit and will be fully integrated into the plant’s operations.

“Laying the foundations is a significant stage in the project, as the idea takes shape into a real structure,” says Ingus Kaprāns, Manager of the Jelgava biomass CHP plant. “Once the foundations are completed, we will proceed with erecting the steel structure and external cladding, so that by mid-December, when the boiler is scheduled for delivery from Norway, the building will be ready for the installation of the new equipment.”

The new 20 MW electrode hot water boiler will enable Gren to respond more effectively to electricity market dynamics and optimise heat production. It will secure more efficient use of energy resources and ensure sustainable and competitive energy production for our customers in the long term. Additionally, it will ensure effective Gren’s role in providing electricity market balancing services. During the implementation of the project, heat production and supply to our customers in Jelgava will continue as usual.

The project is scheduled for completion and commissioning in the first quarter of 2026.
