Between 2024 and 2026, Gren in Estonia will invest more than 20 million euros in the heating networks of Tartu, Pärnu and Ida-Virumaa.

The investment of the Tartu region is 8.2 million euros, which will renew parts of the district heating network in the city of Tartu and expand the possibilities of connecting Raadi area to district heating. Gren is investing more than 7.9 million euros to upgrade the heating networks in Ida-Virumaa. With this financial allocation, it is planned to renovate important district heating pipelines in Kohtla-Järve and Jõhvi. Additionally, nearly 4.7 million euros will be invested in the renewal of Pärnu’s district heating network and thus more than 3 kilometers of heating pipelines will be upgraded in the city of Pärnu.

“The renovation works in Tartu cover three areas and we are also building a completely new district heating pipeline in Raadi to create an opportunity for the residents of this area to connect to sustainable district heating. In Ida-Viru County, the heating infrastructure of Kohtla-Järve and Jõhvi was built nearly 50 years ago, in some places the pipelines are even 70 years old, and it is clear that they age and depreciate over such a long period of time, which in turn may lead to leakages and heat losses and eventually also affects the security of supply,” said Margo Külaots, the Head of Gren operations in Estonia. “The parts of district heating network undergoing renovation in Pärnu were also built 50 years ago and the time has done its job. By replacing the depreciated pipelines with modern ones, we can offer better security of heat supply for our customers. Besides new pipelines also require less maintenance.”

The final cost of the work will be determined after procurements have been carried out. Gren’s investment is also supported by the Estonian Environmental Investment Centre with nearly 4.23 million euros from the European Cohesion Fund (CF) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
