Gren has launched construction of a new 50 MW high-efficiency woodchip boiler house in Acone, Riga — a strategic investment of more than EUR 30 million that will strengthen the city’s energy independence and accelerate its transition to local renewable sources,  ensuring affordable and sustainable heat for the city.

“The new woodchip boiler house is an important step towards strengthening the development and energy independence of Riga’s district heating system. Equipped with advanced and highly efficient woodchip combustion technology, it will provide a reliable and predictable heat supply using local renewable resources, while reducing the need for natural gas in Riga’s district heating sector. We continue to invest in solutions that improve the sustainability, security and accessibility of heat supply for Riga’s residents,” says Andris Vanags, Gren’s Country Manager in Latvia.

The boiler house will be equipped with two 20 MW woodchip boilers, each complemented by a 5 MW flue gas condenser. This technological solution will ensure high efficiency and strong environmental performance through the use of advanced emission-control systems. The total heat capacity of the boiler house will be 50 MW. Sustainable woodchip supplies are planned from local producers.

The boiler house is scheduled to be commissioned in spring 2027. Once completed, it will become Gren’s third heat generation asset in Riga, bringing our market share close to 30% and supporting our strategy to expand sustainable district heating across the Baltics.
