Gren is planning to construct a new 50 MW biomass boiler plant in Riga suburban area. The new plant will increase the share of renewable energy in Riga’s district heating, enhance energy supply security, and reduce dependency on imported fossil fuels while providing affordable energy to the district heating system. The new biomass boiler plant will be located next to the existing Gren Riga biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Salaspils municipality, Acone, ensuring synergies between the two plants in efficient use of resources and operational management.

“The use of local, renewable resources in district heating plays a crucial role in strengthening energy security and independence while advancing decarbonization goals. We are committed to investing in locally available and sustainable energy sources that contribute to economic growth and minimize environmental impact. The construction of the new biomass boiler plant in Riga suburban area is a carefully considered step in Gren’s long-term strategy to transition towards sustainable solutions and more efficient resource utilization,” says Ilkka Niiranen, Gren CEO.

“We have been operating in Riga since 2022 and continue our development by investing in a modern biomass boiler plant. The new facility, together with the existing Gren Riga biomass CHP plant, will enable even more efficient use of wood residues for energy production through modern technologies, ensuring a reliable, stable, and predictable heat energy supply. We are committed to advancing sustainable energy projects to support Riga’s district heating sustainability and enhance affordability of the district heating,” emphasizes Andris Vanags, Gren’s Country Manager in Latvia.

The design and construction of the new Gren biomass boiler plant will be actively carried out over two years, with commissioning planned for the spring of 2027.
